ABOUT THE BOOK

The art and science of embalming and preserving human bodies is one of the most ancient sciences in the recorded history of humankind. The practice appears to have begun with the bodies of ancient God-Kings, High Initiates of the Esoteric and Spiritual Orders. In the lost civilizations of the Kagera-Basin of East-Central Africa, embalming and preservation of human bodies continued until modern times, especially in Bunyoro-Kitara and Buganda kingdoms. The bodies of four Buganda kings are embalmed and preserved at Kasubi Tombs. The tomb is a large traditional round hut made of reeds, copper metal and grass. In ancient Misiri (Egypt), bodies of the Pharaohs were always embalmed and mummified. Even the bodies of their pets (dogs and cats) were embalmed and preserved. In 1982, the Born-Saint, Founder, and Lineage Holder of the Sserulanda Spiritual Foundation directed the first embalming of an Initiate's body; a feat that was successfully carried out using traditional lost methods. Later the Foundation embarked upon contemporary embalming methods using chemicals such as formaldehyde, which is the major embalming agent used in developed countries. This work explains some reasons why embalming is practiced at this remote Spiritual Fraternity in Rakai District of Uganda. Because of the use of this ancient practice, some have circulated unfounded rumors that the Fraternity does not at all bury their dead. The fact is, they embalm and preserve the bodies of only a few prominent Initiates or those whose selfless service to others is deemed outstandingly historical. The Fraternity has three cemeteries where the dead are buried in traditional and modern ways built of concrete graves.
