This collection of stories is in the chronological order of their creation. The initial stories deal with the formation of the author's personae as a writer, in a fairly realistic vein. Some of the later stories are either parables or science-fiction, or both. The final (title) story is once again in the vein of social realism, although with impressionist & symbolist overtones.
