Synopsis

The book entitled "Adventures of 'Gor' the Rhino" is a fiction meant for the young readers of the age group of 7 to 15 years. The prime aim of the book is to create awareness among the young readers about importance of issues like climate change, pollution and biodiversity conservation etc. While the narrative grips the attention of the young reader by eliciting pleasure out of the reading, important technical terms are explained in textboxes along with the chapters. The fictional material is garnish to visit the minds of the young readers so that these important concepts are embedded in their knowledge base for future rational living The story revolves round the life of a young rhino living in 'Kaziranga' National Park, Assam (A world heritage site). The first three chapters deal with animal's relationship to natural cycles like annual floods, man-made one like annual ritual of burning the grass in the park. The subsequent chapters introduce the important characters like 'Gaja' the elephant,' 'Malua' the monkey and ' Bagh' the tiger. Chapters like "Ghosts in the park", "Pollution in the park" deal with the impact of man-made disasters in this important ecosystem. In some of the chapters like "Celebration in the park", attempt has been made to give a glimpse of interesting phenomena like 'bird suicide in a valley called 'Jatinga' and a rare occurrence of bamboo flowering (a phenomenon occurring once in every 50 to 100 years) and problems associated with these phenomena. Chapters named "Poachers in the park, and "'Gor' strays into human grasslands" illustrating skirmishes between poachers and the animals serve as cohesive units in the story. The gradual built-up of the story is dealt with in the chapters 'The poachers came back with a vengeance" and "'Gor' rescued" which end in a climax in the chapter ' The great battle'. The last chapters, 'Erosion in the park' and "'Gor's stay in the 'Chitwan' park" highlights the problem of erosion in the park.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

About the Author I am serving as a senior lecturer in the department of Botany, Kaliabor college, Nagaon, Assam. I have number of popular articles published in dailies of Assam and local magazines. This is my first attempt, writing a book. Kaliabor college is very close to 'Kaziranga' national park .This provided me with the opportunity to have first hand experiences of the park. Presently I am involved with a UGC sponsored project as the principal investigator. I have fourteen research publications in national and international journals.
