ABBY is a young girl living in the bush surrounds of Maryborough, Victoria, Australia. She has a youger brother David (nicknamed Mouse) The two children live with their ailing mother who has a disturbing secret that ABBY is not aware of. ABBY takes sole responsibility of her mother and also becomes responsible for her troublesome brother. ABBY has many of life's burdens to face, she is headstrong and hard working, but Mouse is a layabout who uses his sister to his own advantage. The story spans eight decades and begins with ABBY's father Robert in the "Marvelous Melbourne" of 1885.

Helen Woodward is a mother of five who lives in Central Victoria, Australia. She enjoys reading and writing and helping young writers achieve their goals. Helen immigrated to Australia from the Netherlands with her parents at the age of eight.
